ALL ABOUT COFFEE
DID YOU KNOW?
Coffee is believed to have been discovered in Ethiopia around the 9th century, where legend says a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats became energetic after eating the berries from a particular tree.
By the 15th century, coffee had spread to the Arabian Peninsula, where it became integral to cultures in the Middle East.
Coffee houses, or qahveh khaneh, emerged in Ottoman Turkey in the 16th century and spread to Europe, becoming a social hub.

All About Coffee
The Coffee Plant
Botanical Classification: Coffee plants belong to the genus Coffea, which contains over 100 species, but Coffea Arabica and Coffea Canephora (Robusta)are the most commercially important. Arabica beans are grown at higher altitudes and produce a sweeter, milder taste. Robusta beans grow at lower altitudes and have a stronger, more bitter flavor, often used in espresso blends for added body.
Cultivation: Coffee grows in the “coffee belt,” a region between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, including parts of Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The plants require specific conditions: moderate temperatures, abundant rainfall, and rich soil.
Coffee Production Process
Harvesting: Coffee beans are harvested once the coffee cherries (fruits) are ripe. The process can be done by hand or machine, and the timing is critical to ensure the best flavor.
Processing
Wet Process: Cherries are depulped, fermented, and dried. This method is often used for Arabica beans, resulting in a cleaner, brighter flavor. Dry Process: The cherries are dried in the sun, often resulting in a heavier, more rustic flavor, commonly used for Robusta beans.
Roasting: The roasting process transforms green coffee beans into the familiar brown beans that are used to brew coffee. Roasting brings out the flavor compounds. Light Roast: Higher acidity, fruit-forward, and more floral flavors. Medium Roast: Balanced flavors, with a mix of acidity and sweetness. Dark Roast: Smokier, bold flavors with reduced acidity.
Coffee Brewing Methods
Drip Coffee: (or Filter Coffee) One of the most popular methods in homes and offices, where water is poured over ground coffee and filtered through a paper or metal filter.
Espresso: A concentrated coffee brewed by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee under high pressure. It serves as the base for many coffee drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos.
French Press: A method where coarse ground coffee is steeped in hot water and then pressed with a plunger, resulting in a fuller-bodied, rich coffee.
Cold Brew: Ground coffee is steeped in cold water for 12-24 hours, resulting in a smooth, less acidic coffee that’s served cold.
Pour-Over: Hot water is poured over coffee grounds in a filter, allowing the water to pass through the coffee slowly. This method offers precise control over brewing time and temperature.

BenefitsAntioxidants: Coffee is a rich source of antioxidants, which may help protect cells from damage.
